A Monmouth County man made a curious discovery at the home he inherited from his father in Freehold Township.

The man called police on Tuesday morning at 11:54 am to 41 Pittenger Pond Road in reference to an explosive device believed to be a mortar that was located within the residence.

He told police that he had inherited the home from his father and was in the process of cleaning the home when he made the discovery.

The explosive device is believed to be an 81 millimeter mortar from the Vietnam War Era.

The caller had advised police that his father had been a Vietnam War Veteran.

Officers Jason Nodine and Daniel Rehberg secured the scene and ensured that the surrounding area was safe.

The New Jersey State Police and Ft. Dix Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit had been contacted and the mortar was removed by Ft. Dix E.O.D. for disposal.

Assisting on scene were members of the Freehold Township Independent Fire Company.
