As of now, all New Jersey schools are closed through May 15. Patch asked Governor Murphy if or when children return to school whether they will have to wear masks. He said:

I would bet the answer's yes, that we will be masked when kids get back to school. That would be my personal guess.

The Governor made it a point to repeat that this was merely his opinion, but NJ Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli didn't disagree with Murphy's statement.

Governor Murphy emphasized three things that the people of New Jersey need to do before the State reopens.

  • Continued social distancing
  • "Testing, testing, testing:
  • Contact tracing

Whether children return to school after May 15 for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year or not, he said that classrooms would have to be reconfigured to allow for social distancing.
