It was a gorgeous day on Saturday. We played on the beach, grilled up some food, and then...the Emergency Room.

It all started about 3 am Saturday morning. I had fallen asleep on the couch and got woken up in the middle of the night from my throat and arm itching. It was a combination of wanting to scratch yet feeling some pain.

So I got up, turned the light on in the bathroom, and saw I had a bug bite near my knuckle. It wasn't even red yet, so it must have just happened. I took an allergy pill (I frequently get some swelling and itching from mosquito bites) and went back to sleep.

Saturday (once I re-awoke at a more decent hour), was a gorgeous day. We did some spring cleaning around the house, set up the grill, then spent the afternoon at the beach playing frisbee and soccer.

By the time we got home, 12 hours after my bug bite, my hand was swollen to twice its size, was beet red, and very hot to the touch. So, much as I would have loved to avoid it, I went to the Ocean Care Center ER. Which, by the way, is a beautiful little place!

At this point, I'm pretty sure I had gotten bit by a spider.

After two days of steroids, antibiotics, and double doses of Benadryl every four hours, I am hoping this is under control...but what a scary experience! And a special thanks to Marcia Maloney and the staff that was on duty. They were wonderful.

Have you ever been bitten by anything and then had a severe reaction to it?
