Here is a ranking of the top ten plans for 2015.

The NUMBER ONE diet: DASH. It's the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet. It gets high marks as an all-purpose diet for nutritional completeness, safety, ability to prevent or control diabetes, and its role in supporting heart health. It was originally developed by the federal government to fight high blood pressure.

The #2 diet: TLC. It's the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet, created by the National Institutes of Health. It takes a 'do-it-yourself' approach.

The # 3 diet: The Mayo Clinic Diet. It earns high ratings for nutrition, safety and as a tool against diabetes. Rated 'moderately effective' for weight loss.

The #4 diet: The Mediterranean Diet. An  'eminently sensible' diet emphasizing fruits and vegetables, olive oil, and fish.

The #5 diet: Weight Watchers. This surpassed other commercial diet plans for its short-and long-term weight loss and how easy it is to follow. It is also called nutritionally sound and safe with an emphasis on group support, lots of fruits and vegetables, and room for occasional indulgences.
