Some security teams who are escorting ships through dangerous waters off the African coast and protecting them from Somali pirates have chosen Britney Spears music as a way of keeping the pirates away.

According to msn.com, a British Merchant Navy Officer says that when other attempts to deter the pirates from approaching a ship, they blast Britney songs. Spears tunes were apparently chosen because officials felt the pirates would “hate them most”.

The British Merchant Navy Officer says the Britney songs work because the pirates “can’t stand western culture or music”. He says blasting the Britney music has worked so well that the security teams rarely have to use firearms.
