Voluntary Coastal Evacuations Recommended In Toms River, Brick

Ahead of tomorrow’s storm, Brick Township police are advising people living on the township’s barrier island territory and flood-prone coastal mainland spots to move inland.

Sergeant Keith Reinhard relays information from the National Weather Service that has reclassified the weather system as a potential Nor’easter.

Winds of up to 60 miles per hour are expected. A combination of rain and wet snow poses a threat to power lines.

The length of time that the storm sits over the coastline from Wednesday morning to Thursday night will determine the amount of beach erosion along the ocean and bay.

Toms River emergency management officials recommend voluntary evacuations while township Public Works crews reinforce beach dunes. DPW is also placing sand on streets in neighborhoods that have not signed easements to allow for beach replenishment by the Army Corps of Engineers.

Homeowners there are also being instructed to take their cars and valuables to higher ground. The township is updating on its web page and to cell phone through Nixle.

High tides Wednesday are at 2:02 AM and 2:37 PM. Thursday’s high marks are at 3:10 AM and 3:45 PM. Tide levels are anticipated to be about two feet above normal Wednesday, perhaps four feet Thursday, about the same as the last Nor’easter but well below the surge that took place during Sandy.

Anyone in the township who needs help relocating can call Brick Township Police, 732-262-1100.
