Sometimes kids just can't cope. They are bullied, school puts so much stress on them, they have learning disabilities, they suffer from panic disorder, or they are experiencing peer pressure that they just can't deal with. There are also many parents of children on the autism spectrum searching for ways to open up their child's world. There IS help. And it is here at Mosaic.

Sometimes parents are left in tears as they try to break through to their child. They just wish their child could 'fit in' and 'act normal'. Of course you love your child beyond measure, but you wish there were more people that could see what you see in your child and help them open up, communicate, and see hope and potential within themselves to get through this life without so much of a struggle.

Many times, as a parent, you try everything you can think of to help your child adjust to this world, but you simply run out of ways to get through to your own kid the way you wish you could. Or maybe you're the last person that your pre-teen, teenager, or young adult wants help from. They think you don't get it. Or they think you are just being nice to them because you have to.

Maybe you have a child who has struggled in school since an early age and you are constantly fighting for their rights and an individualized plan that can help them through their school life. You pray for their success, but they just aren't like the other kids and you are worried that there may be a real problem that you need to find an answer to.

Maybe you have even tried doctors and therapists and counselors. You may have brought your child for testing and evaluations. In fact, especially if your child has other physical or mental challenges, you may feel like you have exhausted all of the options you have, or have been so busy treating the other needs of your child that you are overwhelmed by how to provide them with nurturing, hope, and the skills to deal with accepting themselves the way they are and making strides of hope in each and every day.

If your little one, pre-teen, teenager, or young adult needs some help...maybe they are on the autism spectrum, maybe they have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or some other thing classified under 'mental illness'...and you just don't know how to reach them within their soul, there may be an option you have not tried yet. And it's a good one.

Music Therapy. Think about it. You have listened to music your whole life, from infant and toddler songs to those favorite tunes you hear on the radio or download onto your device to play while you drive, fall asleep, walk/run, or work....music influences everything you do.

It relaxes you, or it energizes you, or it takes you back to a time and place that brings memories rushing in, you bond over it with your kids, you dance to it, you make it a part of all your celebrations, some of you play instruments and express yourself that way....music is endless and meaningful and can take you places unexplained by some of the best brain experts. And it can reduce pain...both physical and emotional.

Feelings come out when you hear a song that affects you. And sometimes, especially for a child struggling in this world (and for all of us young and old) music is the key to relaxing, breathing, coping, and hoping. Songs can sometimes express words that a kid can't express themselves. Listening to music can calm a child down and lead them to open up and talk where other therapists who just want to 'talk' to your kid are having no success, or, worse, upsetting your child further.

I am both amazed and surprised that art therapy is recognized as a valid form of therapy, yet music therapy hasn't yet become more well known. But it will. And soon. And that's why I wanted to open your eyes (and ears) to this amazing tool.

With the suicides in our area, drug epidemic, peer pressure in schools, and all of the other things causing some children to lose hope....along with the severe number of autism diagnoses, many parents are at a loss as to how they might get the help that their child needs. Many times these kids are being left without any tools for coping and have made choices that will lead them into a nightmare for themselves and their families.

I have had the honor of getting to know Jonathan Scheick (MA, MMH, MT-BC, CBIS), President & Founder of Mosaic Music Institute, on Atlantic Avenue in Manasquan next to Silton Swim School just off the Manasquan Circle. This incredible man is helping children every day through music therapy and rehabilitation services. And he can help your child.

Music Therapy is an established health profession that uses music within a therapeutic relationship to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of each individual it touches. Through the therapeutic qualities of music, each child's abilities are strengthened and transferred to help in other areas of their lives.

Mosaic provides a unique variety of services including both individual and group music therapy, specialized music instruction, pain management music groups, relaxation and meditation music groups, individual and group neuro-rehabilitation, and so much more.

Who can benefit from this form of therapy?  So, so many (both children and adults), including those with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, developmental delays, Down Syndrome, speech and language delays, CP, MS, learning disabilities, psychological stress, medical illness, chronic pain, neurological impairments, brain injury, and bereavement. (MusicTherapy can also help parents and grandparents struggling with Alzheimers.)
