Last week, you heard about Sarge - a local German Shepherd that endured a tough life, but found a loving home and was in need of financial support.  The story received a lot of support and generated some support to Sarge's GoFundMe page, but also left out a few details about his recovery.  Here is some additional context to the original article:

Sarge's original owner surrendered him to a high-kill shelter where his prospects were not very good.  After being left in a cage for far too long, his hind legs were very weak and developed severe degenerative myelopathy because of it, which eventually spread and led to paralysis.

Thankfully, Sarge was pulled from the shelter by the good folks at Pitties and Pals Rescue, who boarded him (in a home - not a kennel) at Bullys Behaven Dog Training.  During this time, Sarge stayed with Mike Maione for a number of months where he had his very own room and was kept very comfortable, with Mike determined to make him walk again (he even opened his pool early and got a solar cover so Sarge could get additional water treatments at his house). Pitties and Pals, through generous donations, paid for Sarge’s boarding, chiro, and acupuncture treatments.  Volunteers also came to assist with exercise, play time and most importantly, love.

It was also during this time that Jamie and Sam from the Brick Town Veterinary Hospital were introduced to Sarge and after a period of time eventually became his forever home where he still remains happily today.

As is always the case, many people and organizations helped to make Sarge's recovery possible and should all be recognized.  If you would like to contribute to Sarge's care, you may still donate to his GoFundMe account HERE.

Pitties and Pals is part of the Jersey Shore Animal Foundation.

Sarge is a German Shepherd who has been through so much. His owners left him outside where flies ate away at his nose, and was left at a shelter where he would have faced being euthanized due to severe degenerative myelopathy which is similar to Lou Gehrigs disease in humans. The condition left him 100 percent paralyzed in his hind end.

Sarge was rescued from the shelter by two big hearted people and now needs a great deal of therapy. He is only between 5 and 6 years old. a gofundme account has been set up to help this adorable dog and his amazing owners. Please do what you can to help this amazing animal who really deserves it and certainly has earned it.

Jamie, Samantha and Sarge visited us, along with comedian Jeff Norris, who heard about the story and is doing anything he can to help Sarge, including telling us about this story.
