No. 5 CBA 4, Marlboro 3

Senior Liam Sweeney plated classmate Jack Frankovic with the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh as the Colts walked off with a win over the Mustangs to cap a tightly-contested, two-game split between the Class A North squads.

Frankovic led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, moved to third on a ground out and held there as junior Zaine Toneske and senior Joe Figliolino each drew walks to load the bases. Sweeney, who came off the bench to hit, lofted the first pitch to left field -- deep enough to score the speedy Frankovic.

Marlboro tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by junior Josh Mack that scored Nik Gomulka, who doubled to lead off the inning.

Toneske drove Frankovic in with an RBI single that broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Figliolino also picked up an RBI in the bottom of the first with a two-out single that chased home junior Harrison Campi.

Freehold Twp. 11, No. 3 Middletown South 2

Sophomore C.J. Svoboda, sophomore Mike Avino and senior Ryan Keegan combined on a one-hitter and the Patriots (2-1, 1-1) pounded 14 hits in a convincing win over the Eagles (1-1, 1-1) after getting no-hit by Ben Schild and Middletown South in Friday's season-opener.

Svoboda allowed the lone Middletown South hit -- an RBI single by senior Joe Stanzione in the top of the first -- and then made through the first two outs of the fifth inning before departing with two runners on. Avino got out of the jam to preserve what was a 5-2 lead and Ryan Keegan finished off the win with two scoreless, hitless innings.

Nine of the 10 Freehold Township players to step in the box Monday got at least one hit and all 10 scored at least one run. Keegan went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI while sophomore Ryan Costello went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI to key the scoring.

Class A Central

Shore 10, No. 1 Red Bank Catholic 6

The Blue Devils worked 10 walks and came through with four big hits against Red Bank Catholic's talented underclass duo -- Ryan Prior and Steve Svenson -- and cemented one of the biggest regular-season upsets in Shore Conference baseball history by shocking the No. 1 Caseys.

Shore's stunner came just three days after Red Bank Catholic pummeled the Blue Devils, 23-0, in the season-opener for both teams.

Junior Christian Simonsen navigated through four innings working around five walks and and error that opened the door to three RBC first-inning runs. Junior Donovan Hughes, who started the game on the bench, followed him with three strong innings to earn the save and also landed the knockout blow in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single to right-center on a 3-2 count, stretching the lead to 10-4.

In addition to the 10 walks, Shore scored on four wild pitches despite a tight backstop on its home field.
