The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Inc., operators of A&P and Pathmark announced today that they are filing for bankruptcy and that three of their Shore supermarkets are closing. Of the 25 store set to close are A&P in Holmdel, A&P in Aberdeen and Pathmark in Toms River.

A statement from the company read:

The vast majority of our stores are operating normally and will be fully stocked during this process. While some stores will close in the near-term, the vast majority will continue providing customers with the same high-quality products and exceptional customer service. We will also continue to honor all existing customer promotional and loyalty programs. Serving our customers has been and will continue to be our (No. 1) priority.

They site union demands and competition like Wal-Mart and Whole Foods as a few of the reasons for the shutdowns and bankruptcy filing.
