Asbury Park man was behaving erratically before police shooting

The Attorney General’s Shooting Response Task Force has released new information regarding a police officer-involved shooting that occurred last night in Asbury Park.

Asbury Park Police responded to a boarding house on 7th Avenue around 10:00 pm on a report that a man was behaving erratically.

Officers then tried to talk with 27-year old James Manzo at his doorway after they entered the building.

Manzo then attempted to shut his door on the officers before emerging armed with a pair of scissors.

During the encounter, one officer fired at Manzo, fatally wounding him.

Manzo was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.

This investigation is being conducted pursuant to a law enacted in January 2019, Senate Bill 1036, which requires that the Attorney General’s Office conduct investigations of a person’s death that occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in the officer’s official capacity or while the decedent is in custody.
