It is the deadliest school shooting since the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.

UPDATE: After being incorrectly identified by police, the shooter was now known to be 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the younger brother of the man originally named.


UPDATE: The gunman has been identified as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, NJ. He was reportedly wearing a mask and bulletproof vest when he entered the school with 4 weapons. His mother, a teacher at the school, is among the victims.


UPDATE: A local CBS affiliate is reporting the gunman is a New Jersey man in his 20s, and the parent of a student at the school.


UPDATE: WABC-TV is reporting up to 27 people have died, including as many as 18 children in today's shooting. There is speculation that the gunman was the parent of a student and had a confrontation with the school's principal.


UPDATE: The Hartford Courant is reporting multiple people, including children, have been killed.


It happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, about 90 minutes outside New York City.

ABC News reports one gunman was killed, but the school, and all other schools in the area are on lockdown. WABC-TV is reporting 'multiple fatalities' and a second gunman involved.

The Newtown Bee reports that an injured student was carried from the building.

The identity of the gunmen or a motive for the shooting hasn't been released.

This beyond frightening, and I can't imagine what the parents of the students in that school are going through.

The holiday season is supposed to be a joyful time, and for these people it has become a nightmare.
