Here are some things you should know about some types of jellyfish you could encounter in the Barnegat Bay.

Jellyfish You Might Encounter In The Barnegat Bay
Bay Nettles - These are stinging jellyfish and are present in the Barnegat Bay. Bulkheads and floating docks are perfect habitats for the nettle polyps, and according to the NJDEP, they are working hard to keep them in check.

Clinging Jellyfish - The first time clinging jellyfish were spotted in our area was in 2016, and they are reported to have a potent sting. They are only the size of a quarter or dime, but have tentacles that extend about 3 inches.
Lion's Mane Jellyfish - The good news is they like colder waters, but can be around in early spring. They have a very toxic sting. They are more common in the ocean than in the bay.
Moon Jelly - They are abundant in the area and are translucent. They have a mild sting and pose little threat to swimmers.
