Brick man stole a cash register and a safe at Sweet Green’s Food Market, police say

A Brick man who went through a lot of trouble in the middle of the night ends up in handcuffs after police discovered he stole a cash register and a floor safe from the Sweet Green Food Market on Thursday morning.

Albert Tilton of Pine Drive, 63, was seen on Sweet Green’s security camera footage using a sledge hammer to break the glass of the front door to enter the store around 3:00 am.

Tilton then removed the cash register and left the store with it.

An hour-and-a-half later Tilton re-entered the store and removed a floor safe.

Officers responded to secure the scene and a Detective shared the store’s video footage with patrol officers to be on the lookout for the suspect.

It was around 6:00pm that day a patrolman responded to a report of a missing person.

A relative of Tilton’s was concerned because he had shown up at her house at 8:30 am that day, acting somewhat irrational, asking for a ride to sell some things at the flea market.

She refused him the ride and he left the area.

She showed the responding officer footage from her Ring doorbell, and he recognized that the Ring footage showed the same subject as the Sweet Green security camera footage.

Officers then responded to Tilton’s address on Pine Drive and found him riding his bike in the area.

Tilton was stopped and placed under arrest.

Police were then able to discover cash believed to be proceeds of the burglary as well as the stolen safe and the sledge hammer used to break the front door.

The cash register was found in the trail that leads from Pine Drive to Hooper Avenue where Sweet Green Food Market is located.

Tilton was charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, and criminal mischief in excess of $3000.00 worth of damage.
