What’s the point of a college degree if you’ll never be happy at work? According to a new report from Gallup Education, college graduates are the least likely to be enthusiastic about their jobs.

Those with only a high school diploma, or those who never even finished high school, were more engaged on the job. Far less college grads agreed with the statement that they have the opportunity to do what they do best every day.

Brandon Busteed, executive director of Gallup Education, called the numbers shocking, but said there are plenty of theories as to why Gallup came to these findings.

“We have a lot of people who get college degrees and end up in jobs that don’t require a degree or don’t use the degree they got,” Busteed explained.

Basically, there are a lot of people in jobs for which they are overqualified. According to 2010 data, 42 million college graduates were in the labor force, sharing 28.6 million jobs that require a degree.

“You make money with a college degree, but if you can’t do something as fundamental as maximize your potential every day, that’s not a great outcome,” said Busteed. “That’s just something we have to address. We can’t accept that.”
