Consider this a public service aimed at women who try and spend time with their spouses or significant others watching football but know little about the sport.  There is no doubt it can be tough to understand because the language is foreign but here are some examples of football terminology that might help when you hear it from announcers:

Blitz- When a group of defensive players come charging at the quarterback.  The word is derived from Blitzkrieg which was a World War II term used to describe German planes waging an attack.

Encroachment- One of my favorite football words, this is when a defensive player crosses the line of scrimmage and usually makes contact with an offensive player before the ball is snapped.  It results in a 5-yard penalty.

Bootleg- Not to be confused with a smuggler who would hide bottles of liquor in their boots.  In football, it’s when the quarterback fakes a handoff and hides the ball on his hip before he either runs or passes.

Shotgun- Not what you think.  This is an offensive formation where the quarterback is backed up a few yards from the center who snaps the ball to him.

Extra Point/Field Goal- They are both kicks and look the same.  Extra point comes directly after a touchdown and is worth 1 point.  Field goal can take place anytime from anywhere on the field and his worth 3 points.

Red Zone- This is not an area of the country where they vote Republican, at least not in football terms.  The Red Zone is actually the last 20 yards before the end zone and it’s good if you spend a lot of time there with the ball.  By the way it’s also the channel that many Fantasy Football fans watch for 7 hours each Sunday. That’s a subject for another day.

I wish I had time for more but I truly hope this helps.
