If you were minding your business just trying to check Facebook and Instagram earlier, when suddenly you were greeted by a blank page - you're not alone. The sites (which are both owned by Facebook) are experiencing massive outages right now.

Why is this happening? I scoured the web to find an answer and found an article from CNN Business that pretty much said there is no official answer. But I have an idea of what could be going on.

This is going to sound really strange, so stay with me. What if I told you that a planet could be responsible for this social media mayhem. If you're a fan of astrology, you'll get it.

Three times a year, the planet Mercury goes Retrograde - which is a fancy way of saying that it appears to travel backward. I won't go into specifics about that, because it's very confusing. Astrologers believe that Mercury rules over communication - and when the planet isn't up to its normal patterns, anything dealing with communication goes haywire (technology going down, things getting lost in the mail, pesky exes coming back into your life). And if you're wondering, this current retrograde will last until October 18th.

Listen, I'm not telling you that you have to believe that Mercury is responsible for the root of a major social media outage, however, don't you think it's a funny coincidence?

And of course, I will still be searching for the real reason why Facebook and Instagram are down. What else could we possibly do with ourselves in the meantime?
