Heat Wave Continues Today In New Jersey
The longest heat wave of the summer so far will really get going today with temperatures expected to be in the 90s all week with a heat index of at least 100 to 105 degrees.
An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect starting Monday for Mercer, Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties and an Excessive Heat Advisory begins today for Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Union, Essex, Bergen and Hudson counties where the heat index will be nearly 105 degrees.
A large ridge of high pressure is creating the heat wave bringing in the hot and sticky air.
Those who work outdoors work outdoors should take extra precautions with frequent breaks in air conditioned areas. It is recommended that strenuous activity be done in the early morning or evening to avoid the full impact of the sun.
Tips On Dealing With The Heat

- The coolest part of the day is normally sunrise, so plan any necessary strenuous activity for the morning.
- Stay indoors as much as possible. If air conditioning is not available, stay on the lowest floor, out of the sunshine.
- Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty as water is most hydrating liquid to drink during a heat wave. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can intensify the negative effect of heat on your body.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect some of the sun’s energy.
- Never leave children, elderly or pets in the car even with the windows down. Although the outside air temperatures may seem comfortable, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise 40 to 50 degrees and swiftly create deadly, oven-like conditions.
Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
The National Weather Service long range forecast calls for cooler than normal temperatures next week.
