Helping To Save The Beautiful Bald Eagles Of New Jersey

This week, January 10th, was Save The Eagles Day and we are not talking football lol we are talking about the beautiful birds which we love including our nationally symbolic Bald Eagles.

Due to a lot of work from the public and scientists the bald eagle was removed from the endangered list in June 2007. Experts due remind us that pesticides, poaching and other dangers continue to threaten eagle populations.

According to NJConservation.org back in 1970 New Jersey was down to one pair of nesting  eagles….just one. Things have improved but we still have to keep things safe for these birds. Pesticides were one of the big culprits in the eagles fight to survive. Chemical DDT was the culprit that began to effect the eagles eggs and birth rates. DDT was banned throughout the United States of America back in 1972, however the bald eagles were slow to make their comeback around the nation and here in New Jersey.

I’ve only had a few opportunities to photograph bald eagles in nature and it was a thrill. This bird is beautiful and our nation symbol of freedom, so we need to continue to protect and help the eagles flourish. If you do come across eagle nests please leave them be and do not disturb them.
