How to Prepare for an NBC Today Show Concert
For the billionth time I say, I have the coolest job ever. Tomorrow morning I'll be taking a limo into New York City to see Maroon 5 perform live on NBC's Today Show.
So how exactly do you prepare for that?
Tomorrow will be a bit of a marathon day. I have to start preparing today. It all starts with a good sign. Wanna know what mine says? Well, you're gonna have to wait until tomorrow morning!
I always go for big and bright, then hope for the best.
Tonight I'll lay out my clothes (and some snacks) for tomorrow. No, I'm not super organized, it's just that I'll be setting my alarm for 2:30 a.m. (Yes, you read that correctly.)
Ever try to appropriately dress yourself at 2 in the morning? Not a good idea.
I'll attempt to be out of my house by 3 a.m. to meet our listeners at 3:30 a.m.
Once we get everyone into the limo, I go over the basic ground rules. (Don't lose me, don't get into a fight, and try not to pass out -- Yes, it's happened. Yes, more than once.)
Once we get into the city it's a lot of standing around and waiting. For hours. With no bathroom. (It's all a balancing act...just enough food and water to not faint, but not enough that you wish you had an adult diaper.)
You stand in one spot for a while, then you move to another spot for a while...eventually you get to the stage area.
You finagle for a good spot in front of the stage, making sure you're at a good angle for the cameras. (Gotta ham it up!)
Sound check gets going at 6:30 or 7 a.m. The concert starts at 8:30 a.m. Craziness ensues.
We then hop back into the limo so I can get back to do my on-air shift. Marathon day...and no, my workday doesn't end at 3 p.m! Wish me luck...and my apologies if I seem like a zombie on the air!
I will take caffeine intravenously tomorrow. (Not really, but tons of coffee is a must.)
It's all totally worth it. Just another day in the life of a radio DJ, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Look for our winners and our signs tomorrow on NBC's Today Show starting at 7 a.m.!
