Police Chief Andrew Kudrick wrote a letter to residents explaining that the decision was made after the results of "officer reports, conducting interviews and consulting traffic safety officers."

Kudrick went on to say that number of students that walk to school in the district didn't justify keeping the crossing guards on the payroll.

The Township Manager estimates that this cut will save Howell $32,000 per year.

There were five part-time crossing guards employed by Howell and each were said to have worked about three hours a day.

Howell Schools Superintendent Joseph Isola said:

The good news here is we do offer 100 percent courtesy busing to all our students, so while some may prefer walking, there is a seat for every child on a bus so we can safely transport them.
