What Is General John Lacey's Connection To New Jersey?

General John Lacey Jr.’s connection to New Jersey goes back to the Revolutionary War and continued long after the fighting ended.

In 1778, while George Washington’s army was at Valley Forge, Lacey was responsible for patrolling the Delaware River and stopping Loyalists and smugglers from sending food and supplies to the British in Philadelphia.

He also dealt with groups known as “Pine Robbers” who caused trouble along the river and throughout the surrounding countryside.

When Did General John Lacey Come To Lacey Township, NJ?

After the war, Lacey made New Jersey his home, becoming involved in the iron industry and eventually developing Ferrago Forge on Cedar Creek.

He died in 1814, but his name lives on in Lacey Township, which was named in his honor when it was established in 1871.

General John Lacey will be remembered with a fun festival happening Sunday, September 13th at VFW Post 10118 at 2652 West Lacey Road, Forked River, New Jersey.
