Iconic Bell Labs is Leaving It’s New Jersey Home After Years of Innovation
It is a legendary location in New Jersey, known for its decades of innovation for the entire world and it has had its home in Murray Hill, New Jersey. According to NJ.com, "When Nokia’s research arm, Nokia Bell Labs, said in early December the company will move out of the Murray Hill campus over the next five years to relocate to a new tech hub being built in New Brunswick, the announcement spurred an outpouring of memories online from current and former employees."
One of the people who worked for years (45) at Bell Labs, Murray Hill Campus, was my Grandfather. He was at the Union County labs until his retirement. My Grandfather left Bell Labs 57 years ago when he retired. According to NJ.com "Some of the world’s most important breakthroughs have come out of Bell Labs, including the first transistor, the laser, radio astronomy, the dawn of cellular and satellite communications and the beginnings of artificial intelligence. Bell Labs was also the birthplace of the UNIX computer operating system, C++ and numerous programming languages."
Pictured above is a retirement watch my Grandfather received when he retired from Bell Labs in 1967. I still have that watch (a Hamilton) to this day and it still works. Is it more Bell Labs technology lol? He always had nice things to say about his time at Bell Labs. I wish I would've been older when he did retire because I would've been interested to hear about the place, I was only 2 lol. He would commute from Florham Park to Murray Hill each day.
So what is next for Bell Labs? It's a move to Middlesex County, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. According to NJ.com, "Bell Labs’ new headquarters will be located at the HELIX innovation center in New Brunswick. Originally known as “The Hub,” the HELIX innovation center will be a large complex in the city’s downtown on the site of the former Ferren Mall."
So good luck to the next generation at Nokia Bell Labs, This iconic center of innovation in New Jersey will always have a great memory for me and my Grandfather, let's see what the next 100 years will bring to the table with innovation and inventions.
