Why Are We Rushing Summer When It’s Not Over Yet
There are many quotes that emphasize living for today but one by Mother Theresa may sum it up best. “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We only have today.” Short and simple and to the point.
My friend Jim Rankin who is a teacher and coach as well as Captain of the Seaside Park Beach Patrol and I are somewhat consumed by this mentality to always rush days, weeks and months while forgetting about what is NOW. Jim and I both happen to love summer at the shore, he working on the beach and me relaxing on it.
While acknowledging that there are only three full weeks before Labor Day weekend we and many others continue to relish these days as why we love living where we do. However there are those who can’t wait for things we are in no hurry to get to. For example:
- Not only are Back to School ads everywhere they have been out for several weeks. While I understand that in some parts of the country school is getting underway did we need a reminder the first week in July?
- Jim texted me a week ago with a display for Halloween candy in his convenience store. We all know that the so-called holiday is coming up on October 31st but candy promotion two months in advance?
- Of course local retail outlets are filled with fall “stuff” and we all know what’s right around the corner…yes Christmas which should arrive in full swing before the calendar tells us summer is over.
Look we know what’s coming but why can’t we just STOP and enjoy what is right in front of us…today. “Live neither in the past nor in the future, but let each day’s work absorb your entire energies, and satisfy your wildest ambition.”
