The Toms River Police Department recently posted the following on their social media pages:

'On October 19th several reports of fraud were filed with our agency. Victims report that they are receiving telephone calls from scammers from what appears to be the department phone number and utilizing the names of current officers of the department. Victims are told that there are warrants for their arrest and that they would need to pay a cash bail at a location other than the Toms River Police Department.

Please be aware of this scam and know that the Toms River Police Department, or any other law agency in the state, would never ask for cash in person, over the phone, or via digital payment services. If you receive a call asking for payment of any kind, hang up the phone and contact 9-1-1 to report the fraud in progress.

Do not utilize a phone number provided to you by the scammers and do not fall prey to the scammers pressure tactics.'

Another scam that has recently come to authorities' attention is Brushing Scams. These scams occur when online store owners send unsolicited items to individuals who did not make any purchases.

This deceptive practice intends to artificially boost the store's online ratings and reputation. In addition to the unsolicited items, the scammers often post fake reviews under recipients' names to further manipulate their online image.

The items sent are typically inexpensive knockoffs, such as phony jewelry or imitation designer goods. For more information on this scam, you can read further details here.
