Another South Jersey teen is recuperating in the hospital from serious injuries after crashing an e-bike on the bike path in Linwood earlier this month.

13-year-old Cash Reggi lost control of his e-bike on Monday, August 11, while riding at an unsafe speed, and crashed, landing face-first on the cement, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to help with hospital expenses.

Another Serious E-Bike Crash on the Bike Path

Reggi's accident is the latest incident this summer in Atlantic County concerning a teenager involved in a crash on the bike path.

A 14-year-old Egg Harbor Township boy was killed in a crash on his e-bike in July when it collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and the bike path in Somers Point.

Fundraiser Gives Details of Scary E-Bike Crash

According to the GoFundMe for Cash Reggi, the teen left his home in Northfield at about 8 pm that Monday to meet up with his sister so she didn't have to ride home in the dark by herself.

When he took a turn on the bike path in Linwood at an estimated speed of 29 miles per hour, too fast for the situation and faster than the allowed speed of an e-bike by an unlicensed rider, he crashed, with the force throwing him to the cement face-first.

Reggi was rushed to the Trauma Center at AtlantiCare Atlantic City, where doctors decided, because of the severity of his injuries and his age, to send him to CHOP in Philadelphia.

The crash caused multiple injuries, including a broken jaw in three places, lost teeth, several lacerations requiring stitches, and cuts and bruises.

Doctors say his injuries would have been far worse if he hadn't been wearing a helmet.

Cash's Surgery and Road to Recovery

Cash Reggi had surgery with CHOP doctors placing screws in his jaw to move it back into place and wiring his jaw shut.

Cash will be on a liquid diet for up to a month as his jaw heals. Afterward, the work will begin to replace his missing teeth and do other necessary dental work.

The GoFundMe campaign says Cash is known for being a determined and resilient kid who is driven to get better and return to play with the AC Sharks ice hockey team.

Changes to E-Bike Laws Needed

Atlantic County Prosecutor William Reynolds and Sheriff Joseph O'Donoghue say they've seen an alarming rise in crashes involving e-bikes throughout the county in recent years.

"It started to help kids get to work and to school without parents in place. It went from that to different categories of e-bike," said O'Donoghue.

In New Jersey, most e-bikes don't require licensing or registration. Sheriff O'Donoghue is calling for change, he told 6ABC in July.

"It's our job as law enforcement to educate and the parents to enforce and educate their own children," said O'Donoghue. "Legislators, I encourage them to expedite a bill that regulates these e-bikes."

There is a bill that would require registration and insurance on e-bikes that has been sitting in committee since last year.
