It's the latest in a troubling trend of pedestrians being hit by cars in Ocean County as a Lakewood man remains in critical condition after an accident on Sunday evening in Toms River.

Police responded to the intersection of Route 70 near Massachusetts Avenue in Toms River around 11:58 pm Sunday for reports of a pedestrian hit by a passing vehicle.

John Daniels, 54, of Lakewood, was trying to cross Route 70 to contact the driver of the AAA truck he had called to assist with his disabled motorcycle when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge Caliber driven by Marc Trzaska, 49, of Lakehurst.

A preliminary investigation by Toms River Police revealed that there was no indication of impairment of the driver as well as no suggestion of cell phone use.

Daniels was airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center and is listed in critical, but stable, condition.

The accident is being investigated by Toms River Police Traffic Safety Officer David Bartosheck.
