My kids and I have made many great memories climbing lighthouses up and down the Jersey Shore. If you and your family, friends or significant other are able to take part in this challenge, I say GO FOR IT!The Lighthouse Challenge of NJ  weekend takes place Oct. 19th and 20th and the goal is to get you and your friends and family to visit  -- and climb, if you can -- all of the maintained lighthouses in our state.

There is such a rich nautical history in NJ and so many of these engineering marvels have withstood the test of time. The tour also includes a museum and a couple of life-saving stations for shipwrecks off of our coastline.

You'll earn a souvenir at each site on the tour and the added bonus here is that some of these locations are a bit off the beaten path so you will be surprised and happy to discover beautiful areas of our coastline that you may have never been to -- some of these coastal areas are simply charming!

Also this time around, the Cape May Lighthouse and East Point Lighthouse tour stops will have food trucks on hand!

So here's how it works. You consult the digital or physical map, plan a route or PRINT THIS AWESOME LIST OF DIRECTIONS, consider planning an overnight stay to make the trip even more enjoyable rather than doing so much driving each of the two days, be sure to pick up a souvenir penny booklet for $5 at your first lighthouse stop of the tour on that Saturday morning (each lighthouse will have a custom crushed penny to add to the book) and then, once you have attended every lighthouse on the tour, notify the volunteers at the final stop and you'll be entered to win a $1,000 prize!

Even if you can't climb them, the photos alone from this awesome little road trip will make for great memories!

Best of luck and be sure to show us your photos :)
