The rescue took place on Saturday afternoon around 12:04 pm when firefighters were dispatched to "provide technical rescue skills" and help with bringing an injured hiker to safety.

Firefighters were able to use their equipment to provide transportation to the trail's entrance where they had to then get out and hike about a half mile where they joined Rumson First Aid who was on scene treating the patient for their injuries.

"After assessing the situation, it was decided the best course of action was to perform a technical rope rescue," Fowler said in a statement.

A crew from the Community Fire Company was able to place the injured hiker into a "stokes basket" and used ropes and pulleys to wheel the the injured hiker to the embankment 100-feet below where they were standing at the time.

Crews then teamed up below and brought the injured hiker to a boat waiting on the Navesink River so the Sea Bright Fire Rescue team could bring them to shore at Black Fish Cove where an ambulance was waiting to bring the injured hiker to the hospital.

A second anchor point was established and crews re-rigged the pulley system to complete the transfer of patient to an awaiting boat in the Navesink river operated by the Sea Bright Fire Rescue crew.

The patient was transported via boat to shore quarter mile away to an ambulance waiting at Black Fish Cove.

Fowler said that Middletown Township Fire Department Third Assistant Chief Anthony Fulciniti oversaw the rescue effort run by Middletown Firefighters alongsideCommunity Fire Company’s Rescue, Brevent Park & Leonardo Fire Company and Sea Bright Fire Rescue marine units, Middletown's Emergency Medical Service Department and Rumson First Aid.
