Between the snow earlier this week, the icy start to Wednesday, and now they are calling for snow Thursday night through Friday morning.  There is no escaping it, winter is here at the Jersey Shore.

Now, I still can’t believe some areas in South Ocean County down to Cape May, NJ saw totals topping one foot.

Snow totals so far in South Jersey, NJ:

According to the National Weather Service, Absecon, NJ in Atlantic County saw over a foot of snow, while parts of Cape May County saw just shy of one foot of snow.

Snow totals so far in Ocean County, NJ:

Barnegat had an impressive 9 inches of snow while towns like Toms River saw close to 2 to 2.5 inches of snow.

More snow for Ocean and Monmouth County, NJ is expected for Thursday night through Friday morning.

We could see up to 2-4 inches of snow, locally, some areas could see as.

So, who's the Lavallette, Ocean County resident uneasy about the snow.  That's me.  What happened that makes me uneasy about this current weather?  It's not the fact that it's cold or there is snow on the ground.  No, it goes a little deeper than that.

The last snowstorm that I experienced was brutal.

No, it was not in the northeast, which is important to this story.  We can handle snow here.  No matter how large, the tri-state area seems to have it together.

We have stockpiles of salt and cinders, we have plows.

The area is usually prepared.

Well, except one time in the northeast, but that forecast was completely blown and well we ended up with 30 inches of snow in a weekend.

Before moving back to the northeast, my wife and I spent five years in Texas.

The Texas Deep Freeze and Snow

This event really caught everyone by surprise, in San Antonio, Texas.  Where is San Antonio, it’s roughly 2 hours from the Gulf of Mexico, three hours west of Houston, the center of the state, and an hour and a half from Austin.  Summers, hot.  Winters mild, until February.  Even then, we’ll see temperatures in the 30s.  Nothing too out of control.

We never thought we would see snow or a freeze like this.

Well, almost one year ago, Valentine’s Day 2021, we experienced something in the state that no one expected.  A deep freeze.  How cold?  It hit 9 degrees in San Antonio.

On top of all of that, it snowed between 4-8 inches in some locations.  Then to add insult to injury, most of the states lost power due to the freeze.  We were without power for 2 and a half days.  After the first night without power, our house dropped into the 40s.  I could see my breath throughout the house.  Here’s the worst part, our electricity would kick back on, and we would think, “ok, great!” but less than five minutes later, it was off again.

Once the power was restored, we were able to heat the house.  Then the water was off.  You can't make this stuff up.  Since the was off longer than expected, the water tanks were not filling properly.

Then, by the weekend we were back to 60-degrees.

Now, this second storm happened in the northeast but was not expected.  They were calling for less than one foot of snow and ended up seeing close to 30 inches over the weekend.
