Marlton man was doing 120 mph while drunk in fatal car crash

A Marlton man who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and speeding when he caused a collision that claimed the life of a Mount Laurel man in September has now been charged, according to Burlington County Prosecutor LaChia L. Bradshaw and Mount Laurel Police Chief Stephen Riedener.

An investigation began by Mount Laurel Police following the accident on September 3 along Hainesport Road near the Cucina Carini restaurant shortly after 8:00 pm that evening.

Police said the owner of Cucina Carini, Glenn Keen of Mount Laurel, was pulling out of the parking lot onto Hainesport Road when he was hit by Desmond Newberry of Marlton who was heading westbound at the time.

There was a group of good samaritans who pulled Keen from his vehicle just before police arrived at the scene of the crash, but, police said that after he was airlifted to Temple University Hospital, he passed away from his injuries.

Newberry was extricated from his own vehicle by Mount Laurel Firefighters and brought to Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

As police investigated the circumstances surrounding the crash, they secured a warrant which allowed them to access the data from Newberry's BMW which showed that he was driving at speeds in excess of 120 mph just before he struck and ultimately killed Keen in his Ford SUV.

Newberry was later arrested and now charged with being driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding in the form of first degree Aggravated Manslaughter, first degree Vehicular Homicide, and third degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance.

He surrendered himself to police on November 7 and remains in the Burlington County Jail in Mount Holly facing a possible indictment after his detention hearing in Superior Court.

Prosecutor Bradshaw said that in this case Newberry is being prosecuted by Burlington County Assistant Prosecutor Joshua Dennis, who is the supervisor of the BCPO Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.
