Today marks the unofficial start to summer at the Jersey Shore and you don't have to go very far to have fun.

On the Ocean County Breakfast Show with Shawn Michaels and Sue Moll this week on 92.7-WOBM, Ocean County Freeholder Director Joe Vicari encouraged residents to look for local fun before planning any mini-getaways.

"We have fantastic beaches, as far as being clean," said Vicari. "Barnegat Bay, one of twenty-eight national estuaries in the United States of America...we have one of the finest and it's really great. There's boating and all kinds of activities that take place on the Barnegat Bay."

He also invites you to visit the Robert J. Novins Planetarium at Ocean County College and Jenkinson's Boardwalk Aquarium in Point Pleasant among other popular attractions.

Vicari adds that there's a plethora of fun activities for different interests and all age groups across Ocean County.

"We have a planetarium at Ocean County College, an aquarium at Jenkinson's and we have the most coastline in the state of New Jersey...44-miles of coast," said Vicari.

He adds that being bored shouldn't be an option with so many fun activities and events to attend and participate in around here.

"There's something to do everyday in Ocean County," said Vicari. "In most places, it's mostly free. That's what the important thing is...it's affordable."

He adds Ocean County and the Jersey Shore has a number of activities that draws tourists or vacationers in from out of the state as well.

"They come here on a tank full of gas, spend several days here and then go back home," said Vicari. "(They) don't have to worry about airlines or traveling or safety and it makes people feel really confident."

Whether it's the planetarium, aquarium, boardwalk, beach or somewhere else Vicari adds there's always plenty to do rain or shine.

"We have many different things (to do)," said Vicari. "It's more than just the 44-miles of ocean and the sand and Barnegat Bay and the Pinelands."

He adds Ocean County features a number of both educational and recreational family friendly activities.
