For the first time in 144 years of Rutgers University Football a jersey number has been retired.

Eric LeGrand's number 52 will not be worn by another player to take the field for the Scarlet Knights.

CBS Sports reports that the announcement came from the RU Athletic Department today.

LeGrand was a defensive tackle for Coach Greg Schiano who was paralyzed during an October 16, 2010 game against Army. Since his injury, LeGrand's story has inspired the nation as the former star remains ever-optimistic and positive during his long recovery.

On October 29, 2011 LeGrand returned to the field wheelchair bound with the Scarlet Knights for the first time since his injury. Sports Illustrated named it the best sports moment of that year.

The retirement ceremony will take place during Rutgers' first home game of the season when the team hosts Eastern Michigan on September 14.
