I distinctly remember reading the initial report of what happened to Sammy on a rainy night in Wall Township. If you were like me, you had to read the story over again because you couldn't imagine anyone could be so cruel.

While the details of Sammy's abuse were horrific, this event pulled us together as a community. We became Sammy's supporters and cheered him along as he embarked on a long and difficult road to recovery.

Sammy would bounce back and be adopted into a loving home. Thanks to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and Monmouth County SPCA, we would enjoy watch Sammy's progress.

Sadly, Sammy passed away yesterday according to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital Facebook page. In a post:

It is with heavy and broken hearts that we announce that our darling Sammy passed this afternoon. He was in the arms of his loving father, who soothed him and held him while he peacefully passed. Sammy’s father wanted everyone to know that Sammy had a stroke and was having difficult time walking and eating. Sammy was 19. Martin and I (Amy) and so many many of you will never be the same after knowing Sammy--his soulful eyes, his sweet spirit that shone through his beautiful face. Yet in that little baby was such strength. Sammy Strong! He overcame so much then spent his last years in heaven on earth with his father. Now he will be in heaven.

As we imagine Sweet Angel Sammy crossing the Rainbow Bridge, please remember how his father used to hold him and sing to him, then take him out and say to him: “Go Sammy, go be a dog.” Sammy’s dad is comforted by the fact that Sammy will now be with his brothers, Gibson and Max. Let’s all hold his heartbroken father in our hearts and prayers and say to Sammy as he crosses the Rainbow Bridge: "Go Sammy, go be a dog."

More information later. Thanks to everyone who loved Sammy. Xoxo, Martin and Amy.
