Three-car crash in Manchester under investigation

Manchester Police continue investigating a Monday April 30 car crash that injured three including a victim who needed to be airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

Manchester Police say the driver of a gray 2010 Toyota Highlander collided with a blue 2007 Hyundai Azera coming from two different directions at the intersection of Northampton and Commonwealth Boulevard just before 11:30 am in the Pine Lake Park section.

The Toyota was heading north on Commonwealth when it was hit by the Hyundai who had entered the intersection at the same time the other driver was heading in that direction.

The Hyundai accelerated after the initial collision onto the front lawn of someone's home that coincided with the deployment of airbags and the driver being trapped inside.

Police found the Toyota and a black 2013 Chevrolet Sonic with extensive damage in the middle of the road.

The driver of the Hyundai, 79-year-old, Joan Reed of Manchester, was extricated from her vehicle and then airlifted by medevac helicopter to JSUMC for treatment of serious injuries.

The driver of the Toyota, a 17-year-old female from Manchester, was transported to Community Medical Center for the treatment and evaluation of non-life threatening injuries as was the driver of the Chevrolet, 61-year-old, Debra Volpe of Toms River.

The crash is being investigated by Ptl. Ian Bole of the department's Traffic Safety Unit.

Assisting at the scene were members of the Manchester and Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Companies as well as EMTS from both Quality Medical Transport and the Manchester Volunteer First Aid Squad.
