A three-car accident sent one of the vehicles smashing through the front of the Stewart's Root Beer on Route 9 in Howell as people were eating lunch inside Monday afternoon.

The impact caused a pickup truck to flip and sent a car into the restaurant, shortly after 12:30 p.m., according to the Asbury Park Press.

NJ.com reports one of the drivers, 81-year-old William Diehl of Howell, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune with minor injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, 74-year-old Meridinn Ing of Howell, was treated at the scene.

Two people inside, 57-year-old Leonard Mosley of East Brunswick and 37-year-old Brian Buccanfuso of Wall Township, also were treated at the scene.

Stewart's was closed after officials deemed the building unsafe.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Howell police.
