If you're like me, about once a day you go through "that" email.

You know, the one that is bombarded by advertisements and messages not picked up by a spam filter.

Some days there is a lot of junk in there, and a mass delete is the easiest way to clean things up.

Today, though, I came across an email about a class action lawsuit settlement against Verizon.

Now you may be thinking, "It's got to be a hoax or scam." I thought the same thing, but upon further research, this is legit.

Why is there a Verizon Class Action Settlement?

According to the email:

A proposed settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit claimed that Cellco Partnership d/b/a Verizon Wireless (“Verizon”) charged a monthly Administrative Charge and/or Administrative and Telco Recovery Charge (collectively, “Administrative Charge”) on Verizon post-paid individual consumer wireless accounts that was unfair and not adequately disclosed. Verizon has denied and continues to deny that it did anything wrong and that the lawsuit has any merit.  Verizon states that it will continue to charge the Administrative Charge and that it has the right to increase the Administrative Charge. The settlement, if approved, resolves the lawsuit and provides benefits to Settlement Class Members who file a claim.

Not shocking. Those various fees are so foreign many times that I stopped looking.

Big mistake. Those small charges add up.

Do you qualify for the Verizon Class Action Settlement?

The email notice went on to say:

The “Settlement Class” includes consumers residing in the United States (based on account holders’ last known billing address) who received postpaid wireless or data services from Verizon and who were charged and paid an Administrative Charge between January 1, 2016 and November 8, 2023. You are receiving this notice because Verizon’s records indicate that you are in the Settlement Class.

How much can you get from the Verizon Class Action Settlement?

If this settlement goes through, Verizon will pay $100 million to create a settlement fund.

Each elligable Verizon account holder will qualify for up to $100 each. Not retirement money, but still not bad.

The final amount paid out to you will depend on how long you were a Verizon customer and how many people filed valid claims.

You must file a claim by April 15, 2024, to receive a potential payout.
