Seaside Heights Boardwalk Rebirth Begins
How many people can you awaken before dawn to go and look at earth movers and pile drivers? In Seaside Heights today, the answer is, basically, everyone.
At 8 AM, groundward driving of the first piling began for the tourist mecca's new boardwalk, replacing what was destroyed in the superstorm.
"It's like Christmas," Mayor Bill Akers enthuses. "It's a new beginning for the borough of Seaside Heights....we're going to start with about 60 a day for the first two weeks, and after that we're going to amp it up to 100-150 pilings a day."
At that pace, officials predict, the new boardwalk will be done as a month before Memorial Day weekend.
