A Toms River man is in critical condition at Jersey Shore University Medical Center after being hit by a car Monday afternoon walking into oncoming traffic on Vaughn Avenue near Windsor Avenue.

Police said that 61-year old Car Cereghini suffered serious injuries in the accident.

The driver of the vehicle told responding police officers that the pedestrian (Cereghini) entered the road and they had no time to stop or avoid hitting him.

Toms River Police said that the driver showed no signs of being impaired and didn't suffer any injuries.

This accident remains under investigation by TRPD Officer Ryan Fitzgerald.

It's the second such pedestrian accident in Toms River over the last week.

On Friday, a Pennsylvania woman who tried crossing a barrier on Hooper Avenue near James Street in Toms River was hit by a car in oncoming traffic.

Toms River Police announced on Monday that 34-year old Ebony Shepherd passed away at RWJ hospital from her injuries sustained in the accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all involved."
