About a week and a half ago, I gave you the heads up that additional financial assistance for those who are unemployed due to COVID-19 may be coming.

Well now we can confirm: help is on the way.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has just approved an additional $300 a week for those who are out of work.

BUT....in order to receive the additional cash, you must be out of work because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (AKA: if you were unemployed at the start of the pandemic, you are not eligible)

You must also receive at least $100 in unemployment to be eligible for the additional cash.

There will be applications available for the weeks of August 1st, August 8th and August 15th and it is likely that this money will be sent in one $900 lump sum.

But it is very likely that all who are unemployed won't see any money until October.

"Because this is an entirely new program ... for which we cannot use any of our current unemployment trust fund money, accounts, staff or infrastructure, it will not be easy or quick to get this additional money into the pockets of those who need it the most," said State Labor Commissioner Rob Asaro-Angelo.

But there is another catch.....we don't know how long this new unemployment will last.

The FEMA grant is capped at $44 billion and the program will have to end if FEMA's Disaster Relief Fund balance drops below $25 billion.

According to Asaro-Angelo, the "general consensus is between seven and nine weeks."

So there are quite a few unknown variables but long story short, unemployment help is on the way for New Jersey residents.
