Townsquare Media and the Jay & Linda Grunin Foundation are teaming up to salute our local heroes with our Warrior of the Week program.

Congratulations to Steve Gibb, our Warrior of the Week for the week of January 6th, 2020.

According to Gibb's nominator:

After graduating from Union City High School in 1969 after a prolific athletic career in football, basketball, and baseball, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served four combat tours in Vietnam (69-73). He served as a Special Warfare Division assigned to Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 3. He was Honorably Discharged in 1974.

In 1975 he became a professional Firefighter in his home town of Union City and retired a Fire Lieutenant 1999. During that time, he coached football at Union Hill H.S 1974 – 1984 and coached football at FTHS for Chuck Welch in 1991 & 1992 and Gene Blanco in 1998. As a former All-State Quarterback and a two-time State Champion, he naturally became the Offensive Coordinator for the Patriots from 2000-2004 and again in 2007 & 2008. He has been working Security at FTHS since 2001.

In 2000 he started both the Boys & Girls Lacrosse programs and was the Boys Head Coach for ten years and was an assistant coach for five years after earning the Shore Conference Coach of the Year twice, as well as the NJILOA Len Roland Sportsmanship Award (2006). He won three division titles as a Head Coach and two as an assistant. Mr. Gibb also won the NJILA Cursio Division Coach of the Year in 2004. He coached Girl’s Basketball from 2001-2009 for John Scriarappa. In 2018 he was awarded FTHS Lifetime Achievement Award. He is married for 44 years and has three children that all graduated from FTHS as well as five beautiful grandchildren.

Steve Gibb is a true testament of the people in this community and country for his many self-less actions throughout his lifetime. For these reasons, I nominate Steve Gibb as Warrior of the Week!
