Real Talk Ocean County, NJ: We Can Use More Kindness on the Internet
Listen up everyone - this needs to be said.
We live in a really strange time.
The internet allows us to connect with millions of strangers right at our fingertips. Which can be amazing when it comes to reuniting with old friends
or staying in touch with long-distance family members.
But, there's also a major downside...
Have you noticed that some people get "braver" when they talk to people from behind the computer or phone? More and more, I've seen people address others in comments without any regard for respect or common decency.
It's become really upsetting.
I have a side project where I post Reality TV videos on TikTok and Instagram, and for the most part, it's really fun. But lately, people who have a different opinion have been spewing hate. I've been told to shut up, been told I'm ignorant, I need botox...just to name a few. All over a reality tv show!
It doesn't stop there!
I've seen people battling it out with each other in Facebook groups, saying the ugliest things to people they don't even know.
It's mind-blowing. And we need to do better, Ocean County.
Think about how your kids would feel if they saw you treating someone else like this? I'm sure - and I hope - that you taught them differently.
The past few years have been hard on us. It's messed with the way we interact with each other, and how we see life in general.
But I think we can be the change. Let's all start now and practice grace and compassion when we interact with others in person and online.
You never know how much of a difference you can make in someone's life! Do you want to make a good difference or a bad one?
