Is It Safe For Dogs To Eat Snow?

When it snows it is like my dog sees one giant snow cone. He starts licking his chops ready to stick that furry face right into the fresh white powder. It sounds innocent enough but is eating snow safe for our fur babies?

They love to play, dig and frolic in the snow…who doesn’t? Sometimes they just get overheated from playing and they take a chomp or two. Vets say that is not a big deal but if they are eating a lot of snow you may wanna watch out.

If your pooch cools their stomach too quickly you could be dealing with some trouble…

The shock to the internal system could cause diarrhea or canine pneumonia.

Also experts are saying that snow can have a lot of bacteria in it which can cause nausea and dehydration.

There is actually a term for this…it’s called snow indigestion. Little dogs are more at risk than larger dogs for some reason.

So the next time your dog is snacking on the snow you may want to distract them with a good old fashioned throw of the tennis ball.
