Merriam-Webster defines "iconic" as widely recognized and well-established and widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence. So that sounds good, right? And how about it when referring to a sandwich? I think we can all agree that's good for describing a delicious sandwich. In this article, we are going to review a sandwich that has been selected as New Jersey's most "iconic" sandwich. This sandwich is among the best (iconic) sandwiches in America.

Let's discuss the issue of the name. What do you call this sandwich? I call it pork roll and cheese, you may refer to it as Taylor ham and cheese. Regardless of what you call it, can we agree on the fact it's delicious when on a nice roll and maybe with a bit of ketchup? So let's agree to disagree when it comes to "pork roll" and/or "Taylor ham".

In a recent article by 24/7 Tempo, they highlighted the best "iconic" sandwiches in America. "It's not hard to see what makes sandwiches so popular. Whether hot or cold, sandwiches are usually quick to make and always satisfying. They can make a full dinner, a working lunch, or a fast breakfast as you hurry off to work."

In the 24/7 Tempo article, they selected a deli in Monmouth County as the most "iconic" sandwich in the Garden State. Slater's Deli in Leonardo was the pick for their pork roll (Taylor ham) sandwich. "Although some historians say Taylor ham originated during the Revolutionary War, the more likely scenario dates back to 1856 when John Taylor sold his special pork roll in Trenton. New Jerseyans continue to argue over whether to call the salty processed meat (think of it as a relative of Spam) Taylor ham or pork roll - it depends on what part of the state you're from - yet they all agree it is a perfect accompaniment to an egg and cheese on a bun."

I need to take a spin up to Slater's Deli and grab one of their sandwiches. If you visited Slater's Deli, leave us your review. Post your comments below. Are there any other eateries that make an awesome sandwich you want to share? Post your comments below also.
