Vineland Man Charged with Luring Children Near School

A man from Cumberland County is facing a long list of charges in connection with a child luring and lewdness case near a local middle school.

The Vineland Police Department says on the morning of September 29th, they responded to multiple reports of a man who was allegedly attempting to lure children to his vehicle while engaging in lewd behavior.

Those incidents were reported to have occurred while children were walking to school, all within a few blocks of each other, and near Veterans' Memorial Middle School.

A preliminary investigation revealed at least three initial incidents involving at least four victims.

Suspect Identified and Charged

Authorities say they were able to identify the suspect as 33-year-old Rogelio Vega of Vineland; the vehicle that he was in was also identified.

As a result, the following charges were filed against Vega:

  • 2 counts of Luring and Enticing a Juvenile
  • 3 counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child
  • 4 counts of Lewdness
  • 5 counts of Criminal Sexual Contact
  • 2 counts of Luring and Enticing an Adult
  • 2 counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
  • 2 counts of Certain Persons not to have any Firearms
  • Manufacture, transport, disposition and defacement of weapons
  • Prohibited Weapons and Devices (Defaced firearm)
  • Prohibited Weapons and Devices (Hollow points)
  • Prohibited Weapons and Devices (No serial number)

Victim Speaks

WPVI-TV spoke to one of the 13-year-old victims, who said she was approached by a man asking for directions. She said he then exposed himself and tried to lure her into his vehicle.

Police Ask For More Information

Vega is currently in custody and the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Stephen Milosh with the Vineland Police Department at (856) 691-4111. Anonymous tips are welcome.

The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
