A NY Armed Robbery Fugitive Was in Washington Twp., NJ, Until a Cop Spotted Him on Route 42
It was another busy weekend for the Washington Township Police Department in Gloucester County and the highlight wasn't a bar fight or a shoplifter. It was a New York fugitive wanted for multiple armed robberies who apparently thought South Jersey was a good place to visit.
Spoiler: it wasn't.
As they typically do every Monday, the department takes to Facebook to share what its officers had to deal with over the past several days. In this case, it was nearly 300 calls for service, over 50 traffic stops, ten people got arrested, and there were seven accidents.
Some of the more notable cases are as follows:
- Shoplifting Arrest: A Galloway Township woman was arrested for shoplifting $112 worth of merchandise from Target. She was also found to have a $2,500 warrant out of Delran Township.
- Gunshot Investigation: Officers responded to a 9-1-1 hang-up at an urgent care facility and discovered a man in the waiting room suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim reported that the incident did not occur in Washington Twp. The investigation was turned over to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
- Felony Wanted Person Arrest: A suspect wanted out of New York in connection with multiple armed robberies was located by an officer on Route 42. A high-risk stop was conducted and the suspect was placed under arrest. The subject was also found to have a no-bail warrant out of a Hudson County.
- Fight: Officers responded to Ott's Tavern for a fight between two women.
- Domestic Violence/Strangulation Arrest: Following a 9-1-1 hang-up, a Washington Township resident was arrested for choking a roommate.
- Shoplifting: Bottino's ShopRite reported an unknown woman shoplifted over $400 worth of merchandise. Loss Prevention attempted to stop her, but she fled the area.
- Pedestrian Crash: A female pedestrian was struck at the Black Horse Pike and Hurff Lane, sustaining minor injuries. The striking vehicle initially fled but was located by state troopers.
- Car Meet-up Takeover: Officers responded to the Walmart parking lot for a car meetup. Organizers were contacted and the event was shut down.
- Fraud/Harassment: A resident reported her social media accounts were hacked. The suspect demanded money and threatened to release personal information and "SWAT" her house if payment was not made. An investigation is ongoing.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
