A Jackson man's leg was severed after his motorcycle was struck by an oncoming vehicle at the intersection of Whitesville Road and Route 70 around 11:30 am on Wednesday.

Toms River Police said that John Troncone, 25 of Jackson, was heading east on Route 70, on a Harley Davidson motorcycle and had a green traffic signal at the time when suddenly Robin Smith, 44, of Berkeley Township turned left onto Whitesville Road in front of the motorcycle.

Patrol Officer Bridget Badalis immediately applied "two life-saving tourniquets" to Troncone’s leg on the scene.

His leg had been severed in the accident and after she applied the tourniquets, Troncone was flown to Jersey Shore Medical University for treatment.

Police said Smith was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Toms River Traffic Safety officers were joined at the scene by several patrol officers, Ocean County CSI, Toms River CSO’s and Hatzolah.

Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Terry Warren is investigating the accident but so far Smith has been cited for Failure to Yield at an Intersection, Reckless Driving and having an Unregistered Vehicle.

"We would like to thank the several good samaritans who stopped and rendered aid immediately while awaiting police and first aid arrival," Toms River Police Spokeswoman Jillian Messina said.
