Jersey Shore University Medical Center named among the best nationally for maternal care
It's a Boy! It's a Girl! It's Jersey Shore University Medical Center being named among Newsweek's 2020 list of the Best Maternity Care Hospitals in the United States.
Hackensack Meridian Health made the exciting announcement on Wednesday.
The list recognizes facilities who have excelled in providing care to mothers, newborns, and their families, and uses the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey and The Leapfrog Group.
“Best Maternity Care Hospitals are an elite group of hospitals from across the country,” Nancy Cooper, editor in chief of Newsweek, said for the HMH statement. “These facilities are to be commended for the care they provide to women and families, and for giving babies a strong start to life. Particularly in these uncertain times, we are honored to share this list of top-ranked facilities with Newsweek’s readership.”
JSUMC has met The Leapfrog Group’s standards for maternity care on evidence-based, nationally standardized metrics and established by Leapfrog’s national expert panel which includes lower rates of early elective delivery, NTSV C-section, and episiotomy, as well as compliance with process measures including newborn bilirubin screening prior to discharge and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section.
“We have an exceptional obstetrics and gynecology team providing the most advanced maternal care and women’s health services in the region,” Vito Buccellato, MPA, LNHA, chief hospital executive, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, said. “This recognition is a welcomed acknowledgement of all their efforts.”
“Our team is focused on providing unparalleled safety, advanced care, and the best possible experience to all our patients,” Scott Smilen, M.D., FACOG, chair of obstetrics and gynecology, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, said. “We continually work together to enhance our support services, prenatal and postpartum programs, and meet the needs of moms during routine or more challenging pregnancies.”
JSUMC has an academic medical center which provides patients with advanced, comprehensive medical and nursing obstetrics and gynecology services, including care for complex pregnancies, prenatal and postpartum programs, outpatient lactation services, as well as educational, social, and nutritional support.
They also offer a full range of high-quality health services to women at every stage of life, from adolescence to menopause. The gynecology service consists of leaders in gynecologic oncology, urogynecology (female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery), family planning, minimally invasive surgery, reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
“As an academic medical center, Jersey Shore’s patients benefit from the collaboration between our physician faculty, residents, and nurses as they develop best practices for clinical excellence,” Ken Sable, M.D., MBA, FACEP, Hackensack Meridian Health regional president, southern market said. “This excellence is reflected in the high-quality and safe care provided by the maternity team.”
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Jersey Shore University Medical Center has a reputation for exceptional care and treatment in pediatrics.
They also have the region’s only Perinatal Center for critically ill infants.
"If God forbid there's a baby from a mom who had hypertension and may have been born prematurely or maybe the mom was diabetic and the sugars aren't being regulated or just a baby that may have some other metabolic or physical problem, the resource of having the NICU here is phenomenal because they can move the baby here and do pretty much anything that they can do in any major city," Dr. Steven Morgan told 92. 7 WOBM News in December of 2019. "We're very fortunate to have that here (at JSUMC). God forbid we have a difficult delivery and the baby needs resuscitation or needs to be intubated, there's always a Neonatologist in the building, pediatric residents and P.A.'s."
