Juwan Roman, 18, of Newark, was sentenced to seven years in the custody of the Commissioner of Department of Corrections after previously pleading guilty to two counts of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose stemming from the September 7, 2020 incident, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced on Friday.

His sentence is subject to the terms of the No Early Release Act which means that Roman must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence before he may be considered for parole eligibility.

On the day of the attack, Point Pleasant Beach Police respond to a fight on Jenkinson's Beach around 3:30 pm after getting several 9-1-1 calls.

When officers arrived to the sands, they found Alex Galdamez, 22, and William Mazariego, 18, both from West Haverstraw, New York suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Galdamez and Mazariego were both then treated for serious injuries at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

As Point Pleasant Beach Police and the Ocean County Prosecutors Office Major Crimes Unit investigated the stabbing attack, they learned that it was a 17-year old Juwan Roman who was behind it.

He was arrested at the scene without incident and then brought to the Ocean County Juvenile Detention Center where he's been since September 7, 2020.

Prosecutor Billhimer said that Roman voluntarily waived jurisdiction of the Family Court, which handles juvenile delinquency matters, for being a minor at the time.

Roman then agreed to be prosecuted as an adult and pled guilty to the charges on May 13, 2021.

Prosecutor Billhimer said that Chief Juvenile Assistant Prosecutor Anthony Pierro and Assistant Prosecutor Madeline Buczynski handled the case on behalf of the State.
