Ocean County Prosecutors have released the numbers from the latest Project Medicine Drop.

There were nearly 4,000 pounds of unused prescription medicines safely disposed and burned off on Friday September 28.

Since the program started in 2014, 38,780 pounds of various medicines have been destroyed between October 3, 2014 and September 28, 2018.

Project Medicine Drop is the countywide initiative started by Prosecutor Joe Coronato to make disposing of unused medications more convenient for Ocean County residents.

"With just under half of the municipalities in Ocean County having easily accessible medication drop boxes at police department entrances, there is no excuse not to clean out and drop off these potentially dangerous meds," the OCPO said in a statement.
